Why Men Pull Away Even When You’re Giving Everything

You text him first, you plan the dates, you pay for dinner, you even remind him to call his mother, and he still pulls away. Here’s the truth: it’s time to stop. Breathe, radiate, and watch what happens. When you pull your energy back in, you create space. And in that space, masculine energy rushes to fill it.

I’m Brody Boyd with Magnetize Your Man, and for over twenty years combined with my wife Antia, we’ve helped thousands of successful women around the world attract a loving, long-term, committed relationship with the man they want, without wasting years on heartbreak or unavailable men. Here are ten things to stop doing for men. None of them cost you anything, and within thirty days, you’ll watch who steps up.

Stop Mothering Him

Mothering a man means anticipating his needs before he expresses them: cooking for him when he didn’t ask, cleaning up after him, buying him things, setting up the dates, sending reminders, even choosing his outfits. You start treating him like a child, becoming the hero, protector, and provider, which is actually a masculine role. When you step into that role, you push him further into the feminine, and his sense of responsibility and ownership over the relationship disappears.

Even if he says “thank you, this is so nice” in the moment, consistently mothering him will erode his investment, his attraction, and his desire over time. If you look honestly at your relationship right now, ask yourself: are you primarily giving to him, or is he primarily giving to you? If it’s you, stop the madness. As the old saying goes, if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

Stop Overruling His Decisions

Imagine he picks a restaurant you don’t love. The masculine way to handle it is to say, “No, I hate that place, we’re going somewhere else.” The feminine way is to say, “May I ask if we can eat somewhere else instead? I’d really love that.” One commands, the other requests. One tells him he’s wrong, the other simply shares a feeling and asks for his help.

Do you think a man is more attracted to his coach or his cheerleader? When you respect a man’s leadership and trust his decisions, something magical happens: he wants to earn that respect even more. Our client Stephanie used to criticize and correct her boyfriend constantly, and he kept pulling away. Once she started saying “thank you for handling that, I really appreciate you” and trusting his choices instead of questioning them, he proposed within three months. A man doesn’t fall in love with the woman who gives him the most. He falls in love with the woman he’s most afraid to lose. Stop trying to love him into commitment. Start respecting him, and he’ll be far more likely to give you what you crave.

Stop Planning All the Dates

Most women are over-functioning in their relationships without even realizing it. You think you’re being helpful and mature by taking the lead, but you’re actually destroying polarity, the very force that creates attraction. Masculine energy is about giving, leading, and solving. Feminine energy is about receiving, following, and trusting the process. Attraction happens when those two energies are in balance.

When you step into your masculine by leading, planning, and managing, he has to step back, because two people can’t lead at the same time. I hear this constantly: “He’s not planning dates, he’s not texting enough, he’s not making me feel secure.” And when I ask what she’s been doing, the answer is always the same: checking in, planning, initiating the relationship talks. She’s been leading. And when you lead, you take away his chance to be the hero, his chance to win you over, and then you end up resenting him for not doing the very thing you never gave him room to do.

Stop Texting Him Novels

Long back-and-forth text exchanges with little in-person or phone conversation are a red flag. The more you text, the less urgency he feels to actually see you or call you, which is where real progress in a relationship happens. We see this constantly with women who come to us: excessive texting has sent the relationship into a downward spiral of miscommunication and disconnection.

A man can’t feel your heart, your vulnerability, or your feminine energy through a screen. He’s just looking at letters and numbers. Your emotions live in your body language and your voice tone, and without those, he won’t feel that magnetic, open feminine energy that draws him into deep devotion rather than just a casual hookup.

Stop Bringing Up His Past Mistakes

Instead of dredging up old grievances, try sharing appreciation: “I loved when you did this for me, it made me feel so special,” or simply smiling and thanking him with your body. If nothing recent comes to mind, bring up a good memory from the past.

Too often, women bring negative moments from the past into the present: “You forgot this, just like you forgot my birthday last year.” This creates a negative association, reminding him of his failures and lowering his masculine self-esteem. He starts to feel unneeded and unable to make you happy, which can push him toward ending things. Instead, remind him of the times he was your hero. He’ll remember that it felt good to show up for you, and a healthy man will want to do it again.

Stop Putting a Timeline on Him

If you’re running your love life like a project manager, tracking timelines and micromanaging every text, you’ve shifted into masculine energy. And two people trying to lead at once is like two drivers fighting over the wheel at eighty miles per hour. Someone ends up in a ditch.

Think of it like ballroom dance. The masculine leads with structure, the feminine follows and expresses herself. If she starts yanking his arm and correcting every step, the dance collapses. The same happens when you fixate on outcomes: “He needs to meet my mom by Christmas,” or “He needs to say I love you by month three.” Men feel that pressure even when you think you’re being subtle, and it makes them want to run. Detaching from the outcome doesn’t mean you stop caring. It means you stop strangling the relationship with your grip, show up open and respectful, and trust him, and the timing, to unfold. Instead of obsessing over when he’ll text back, go live your life.

Stop Paying for the Dates

If you’re paying for dates, you’re back in the masculine, provider role, and you’re pushing him into the feminine. A mother provides for, decides for, and leads her child, which is a masculine role, and the child stays a child as long as she keeps doing it. For the man to show up as a man, you have to stop being the mother, which means you stop providing and giving unless he’s led you to.

Even in an exclusive relationship, look at the overall dynamic. If you’re the primary giver and he’s primarily receiving, that’s a depolarized relationship, and you’re both going to lose attraction over time, especially him. Keep the polarity alive by not paying for dates and not doing things for him unless he’s asked or led the way.

Stop Impressing Him with Your Resume

We don’t care that much about your accomplishments. We care about who you are. Many women worry that their success intimidates men, but on a biological level, men aren’t drawn romantically to your resume. If you lead with your achievements, your competitiveness, or your role as breadwinner, you take away his opportunity to be your protector and provider, and that erodes the polarity that creates chemistry.

Your accomplishments are wonderful and worth celebrating, but they aren’t what makes a man fall in love. Lead instead with your energy, your femininity, and your presence as a partner. That’s what creates real attraction.

Stop Saying Yes to Lazy Invitations

Hold a high standard for what you deserve, even in casual interactions. If a man isn’t meeting that standard, don’t engage until he does, or communicate clearly what you need.

Early in our relationship, I used to send Antia vague texts like, “I’m going to the museum Saturday” or “There’s a party Thursday,” expecting her to invite herself along. She never responded. When I later asked why she hadn’t come, she told me plainly, “You didn’t invite me, you just told me what you were doing.” That standard, refusing to respond to wishy-washy, indirect communication, actually endeared her to me. It showed she valued herself and wouldn’t settle for breadcrumbs. She wanted real initiation, and that made me want to give it to her.

Stop Making Excuses for Him

If you’re out here turning red flags into “quirks,” telling yourself he’s just going through a hard time or emotionally unavailable because of his ex, and that if you love him enough he’ll heal like a character in a novel, stop. He’s emotionally unavailable because he’s emotionally unavailable. Period.

Maybe he says he’s ready for a relationship but texts you at midnight, and you think if you’re just patient enough he’ll change. Maybe he’s still living with his ex but swears he’s leaving soon, and you think your connection is different. Maybe you’re double and triple texting him until you’re basically talking to yourself. You are not his therapist, his mother, or his emotional support animal, and if you keep trying to be, you’ll waste years waiting for someone to become who he’ll never be.

Our client Linda spent years with a man full of promises and empty of action. Once she learned to watch his actions over ninety days instead of his words, the truth became impossible to ignore. Words are cheap. A man can say “I love you” while treating you like background scenery. It’s his actions over time that tell the real story. Linda is now eight years into a marriage with a man who keeps his word and treats her like the priority she always was.

Give Yourself Grace, and Give Yourself Standards

We’re all learning and growing, and that process deserves grace. But it also deserves standards. Wanting someone consistent, kind, respectful, and emotionally available isn’t being needy. It’s valid. It’s what you deserve.
