A man hates to hear these seven things in bed. Maybe you didn’t know that he hates them. Maybe you didn’t even realize you were saying them! But if you’re like many women who want deep intimacy and lasting connection, it’s important to understand these phrases and what they do to a man’s confidence and desire.

I’m Kevin Anthony, a guest writer for Brody & Antia, and I’m a certified sexologist NLP practitioner and sex love and relationship coach and for over a decade I have been helping men women and couples have the relationship of their dream in the best sex of their lives.

In this article, I’m going to show you the bedroom mistakes that can destroy intimacy and connection. But more importantly, I’ll teach you how to communicate in ways that deepen love and pleasure for both you and your man.

Ready? Let’s dive in.

7. You always do that

Imagine this: You’re in an intimate moment. He’s doing something you don’t like, and without thinking, you snap, “You always do that!” It’s a simple comment, but to him, it feels like a slap. He’s left confused, defensive, and probably wondering, What do I always do? What’s the problem?

This phrase is damaging because it’s rooted in blame. Saying “you always” puts him on the defensive and makes him feel like he’s perpetually failing you. It doesn’t inspire him to try harder; it makes him want to shut down.

Instead, try using softer, more constructive language. Say, “That’s not working for me today. Could we try something else?” Or, “I’d love it if you did this instead.” By framing your feedback gently, you’re encouraging collaboration and trust. You’re also keeping the intimacy alive rather than killing the mood.

6. Why don’t you ever…?

When you ask, “Why don’t you ever go down on me?” or “Why don’t you ever try that position?” you might think you’re addressing a need. But what he hears is pure criticism. It feels like an accusation, as if he’s always falling short.

This question drips with disappointment and immediately drains the energy from your intimate moments. No one wants to feel like they’re being evaluated and found lacking, especially in a space that’s meant to be loving and vulnerable.

Here’s a better approach: Flip the complaint into a positive request. Say, “I love it when you do [something you enjoy]. Can we do more of that?” This shift in tone makes him feel appreciated and motivated to please you. Remember, intimacy thrives on positivity and teamwork, not blame.

5. You’re not doing it right

Ouch. Hearing this is like a dagger to a man’s heart. Most men genuinely want to please their partners in bed. When you tell him he’s not doing it right, it’s a direct hit to his confidence. He’s suddenly filled with doubt, questioning his abilities and his worth as a lover.

Instead of shutting him down with criticism, guide him gently. Say, “I really love it when you do it this way,” or “Could you try doing this for me?” It’s all about framing your desires in a way that encourages, rather than discourages, him. When he feels supported, he’ll be more eager to explore and meet your needs.

4. Why did you come so quickly? I wasn’t finished yet

Premature ejaculation is a sensitive issue for many men. Often, they’re already aware that they didn’t last as long as they’d hoped. When you voice your frustration with a comment like, “Why did you come so quickly?” you’re reinforcing his worst fears and insecurities.

Men often experience performance anxiety, especially when they’re worried about lasting long enough to satisfy their partner. This anxiety can create a cycle where they perform even worse under pressure.

A more compassionate approach can break this cycle. Instead of focusing on what didn’t happen, focus on what’s still possible. Say, “Would you use your hands on me?” or “Could you grab the vibrator?” Afterward, when you’re both relaxed, you can gently bring up the idea of working on lasting longer together. When you frame the conversation as teamwork, it builds trust and intimacy rather than shame.

3. Are you finished yet?

If you’re asking this question, it’s clear that you’re not enjoying the experience. To a man, it’s like a slap in the face. It sends a message that you’re just waiting for the ordeal to be over.

For men, one of the most disheartening things is knowing that their partner isn’t into the experience. Of course, if the sex isn’t satisfying, that’s a valid concern. But expressing your dissatisfaction in the moment like this can crush his spirit.

If you’re not feeling it, consider communicating in a more constructive way. Maybe you can guide him with requests or suggest taking a break to connect in other ways. Building intimacy doesn’t mean faking enjoyment; it means finding ways to stay present and open with each other.

2. Not tonight, honey, I have a headache

This classic line has become a running joke, but it’s no laughing matter when you’re in a relationship. Men see this as a rejection of not just sex, but of them as a whole. If you’re consistently brushing him off, he may begin to feel unwanted and undesired.

Of course, there are times when you genuinely don’t feel up to it. That’s perfectly okay. But instead of using a cliché excuse, be honest. Say, “I’m really tired, but if you’re willing to take it slow and help get me in the mood, I’m open to seeing where it goes.” This shows that you’re still emotionally available, even if you’re not 100% ready to jump into bed.

1. It’s so small

No man wants to hear this. Period. Even if your comment is meant as a joke, it cuts deeply. Many men have insecurities about their size, even when they’re perfectly average. Mentioning it in a negative way only feeds those insecurities and can severely damage his confidence.

You don’t need to exaggerate or lie about his size. Instead, focus on what feels good. Say, “It’s perfect for me,” or “You know exactly how to use it.” Positive reinforcement builds trust and creates an environment where both partners feel safe and confident.
