How to Know When a Man Is Truly Serious About You

Have you ever been with a man who says all the right things, yet you still cannot tell if he is truly serious about you or just comfortable with you? I’m Brody Boyd, and as a man who is deeply in love, I know exactly what goes through our minds when we start to fall for someone. Here are the nine things men only do when they are serious about you. By the end, you will know exactly where you stand. For over 20 years combined, my wife Antia and I have been helping thousands of successful women around the world create loving, long term, committed relationships with the men they want, and quickly.

1. He Bets on Your Trajectory, Not a Perfect Past

A serious man wants to know what your future together actually looks like. Will you genuinely enjoy each other’s company for the long haul, or will you be fighting before long? The only real gauge a man has for the future is what the past and present look like. If there has been a lot of drama, heartache, or poor communication, he will notice, and that is not automatically your fault. It could be on his end too. He may realize he needs to change something himself, or he may see that the two of you simply are not a good fit in values or lifestyle. But if things do not have to be perfect right now, a man who is serious will still look for the trajectory. Is it improving? Is it moving upward? When I was first dating Antia, we had our share of issues and arguments, but I could already see we were on a good path together, and that mattered more than any single rough patch.

2. He Wants to Know Why You Are the Way You Are

If a man deeply cares about you, he wants to understand what makes you who you are, not just what you do or where you come from. He wants to know your values, your beliefs, why you think and feel the way you do. Part of this is him checking for long term compatibility, because the future is about building a family and a partnership together. But part of it is simply love making him more curious about you. This often unfolds slowly. He will ask about your opinions on the world, your favorite foods and activities, your childhood, your upbringing, your past relationship experiences. He is not just gathering information, he is falling deeper into who you are.

3. He Handles It Before You Ask

A serious man runs ahead of your needs quietly. He is not only listening when you tell him what you need, he is paying attention to the small cues and remembering them so he can anticipate what will make you happy. If you are traveling together, he has the hotel and flights booked, snacks packed, and safety considered before you even think to ask. If you are camping, he makes sure you are warm, fed, and comfortable rather than stuck suffering in the rain. He is also making changes within himself, not because you asked him to or tried to guide him, but because your femininity inspires him to become a better man on his own.

4. He Shuts It Down When Someone Disrespects You

A masculine man who is grounded in his core has a deep desire to protect his territory, and that includes you. If a family member, friend, or stranger says something disrespectful to you, he will speak up immediately, without needing to be asked. He might tell someone directly to stop talking to you that way, or step in if a waiter, service worker, or stranger on the street is being aggressive toward you. He may physically move to shield you or verbally take control of the situation. This is him showing you that you are his queen, and that your safety and honor matter to him.

5. He Moves Toward Your Tears, Not the Door

I used to struggle with an avoidant attachment style from childhood, and that showed up in past relationships. But when I met Antia and grew more emotionally invested, everything shifted. When she felt sad, I moved closer instead of pulling away. I asked her more questions, encouraged her to let her emotions out fully, even to cry or scream if she needed to. I remember driving through the forests of Northern California when something came up for her. I pulled the car over and told her to get out and let it all out. She screamed, released it, and we continued on. That willingness to go into the hard feelings with you, rather than telling you to stop crying or brushing it aside, is a real sign of emotional investment. It takes maturity, and as long as he is trying, that effort matters.

6. He Starts the Hard Conversations

A man building something to last will not dodge the difficult topics. He sees the relationship like a castle he is constructing brick by brick, and he wants it to hold up over time. That means he will bring up tough subjects: long term goals, values alignment, or concerns about needs that might not be getting met on either side. He is not doing this to create conflict, he is doing it to find real solutions where both of you win. A relationship does not need to be perfect to be strong, but he needs to be willing to address the cracks so the foundation holds.

7. He Folds You In, Not Just Introduces You

Anyone can say hello. A serious man makes you one of them. Introducing you to friends and family is easy, even for a man who only sees you as casual. What shows real investment is when he facilitates you actually bonding with the people closest to him. He tells you what you will like about them and tells them what they will love about you. He creates space and time for real connection, not just a quick hello. When I was dating Antia, I made sure she spent real time with friends I had made in Hawaii, and later with my family through calls and shared stories, because I wanted those bonds to be genuine, not just a formality.

8. “I’m Not Ready” Is a No, Not a Maybe

This is one of the biggest traps women fall into. When a man says he is not ready for a relationship, that he just got out of something, or that he is simply having fun right now, many women interpret it as “not yet, but soon.” In most cases, what he is really saying is that he is not that interested in you. It is a gentle, polite way of letting you down without saying it outright. If he mentions an ex in the process, he may still be emotionally tied to her, and prioritizing that connection over you. Sometimes he is telling the truth and genuinely is not ready, especially after a divorce or loss, but that still means you could be waiting months or years for something that may never come. Either way, take “I’m not ready” as your answer, not as an invitation to wait around.

9. He Gives Up His Freedom and Calls It a Win

A man in love knows that being in a real partnership means he is no longer acting purely on his own independent will, and so are you. That means compromise, adjustment, and finding solutions where you both win rather than one person winning at the other’s expense. But he is not just losing freedom, he is gaining something far more valuable: partnership and camaraderie. When Antia and I got married, we said to each other, “With this ring, I set you free.” We meant that marriage would not require either of us to shrink or sacrifice who we are, but that we would become freer, bigger, and better because we chose to build something together. Acknowledging that truth built enormous trust and safety in our relationship from day one.

Give Yourself Grace and Standards

At the end of the day, understand that we are all learning and growing. Give yourself grace in this process, but also hold onto your standards. Wanting someone who is consistent, kind, respectful, and emotionally available is not being needy, it is being clear about what you deserve.
